Physarum polycephalum is a plasmodial slime mould. The plasmodiam is the active feeding stage of the organism. If the plasmodium dries during feeding it forms a crusted resting stage known as the sclerotium. This is sent in a small box and remains dormant until favourable conditions return. Then the plasmodium emerges and continues to feed.
